Description
Slightly cloudy, the drizzle has stopped,
By day I sit lazily in the deep garden.
Then I become aware of the dark moss,
it wants to climb up along my clothes!
Wang Wei (c. 701-761) of the Tang Dynasty became famous primarily for his nature poems. He was a meritorious civil servant, a devout Buddhist, and a talented painter – elements all reflected in his poetry. The above poem stands out for its visual perspective, absorption in nature, and humor.
Silvia Marijnissen translated novels by Nobel laureate Mo Yan and by Eileen Chang, modern poetry by many poets from China and Taiwan, and classic landscape poetry. Together with Anne Sytske Keijser and Mark Leenhouts, she translated the 18th-century classic The Dream of the Red Room.
