SUMMARY:Lecture: "The Classical Chinese Gardens". With Chinese 3-course lunch in ... Brabant! Saturday 27 June.
DESCRIPTION:Chinese gardens developed more than 3000 years ago. These include the extensive “impressive gardens” of the Chinese emperors as well as the more intimate gardens\, laid out by scholars\, poets\, former officials and merchants. These gardens are meant to reflect and escape from the outside world. \n \nThe starting point here is to express harmony between man and nature. And all this in an idealized miniature landscape that usually contains a number of fixed elements. Curious about which elements are always present in a Chinese classical garden? Here’s a sneak peek: the many zig-zag paths are not only decorative\, but they also have a very special function! Which ones? You will hear it during the Histotainment lecture. \n \nWe start in the morning from 10.30 am with coffee with homemade “Tartelette Chinoise” (with Lychees)\, followed by the lecture at 11.00 am. With a demonstration of objects – tailored to the lecture.\nAfter the lecture\, a short visit to our -small- Chinese garden with striking plants is possible.\nThis is followed by the traditional 3-course lunch\, with inspiration from Chinese cuisine\n*As a starter this time a Chinese vegetable soup with pak choi\, Tong-Ho and shrimps.\n*This is followed by the “Dragon Pie” with 3 types of mushrooms\, including black Chinese mushrooms and a garnish with Lotus root.\n*The dessert is a nod to Chinese history: how about a mandarin bavarois with loquats and go-ji berries? \nMango Dessert China

SUMMARY:FLAG DAY SATURDAY 20 JUNE SCHEVENINGEN
DESCRIPTION:Vlaggetjesdag is an annual large-scale folk festival in Scheveningen that celebrates the arrival of the Hollandse Nieuwe herring. It is a combination of culture\, history and fish promotion\, where the harbor is full of decorated fishing boats and thousands of people enjoy music\, markets and fresh herring. For Dutch and foreigners\, it is always fascinating to attend this typical Dutch tradition. Unlike in previous decades\, in 2026 the processing of herring will take place with stern trawlers and cold stores. The traditional auction of the First Barrel of Herring still takes place in Scheveningen. \nThe official opening of the flag day event will take place on Saturday\, June 20 in 2026 in the harbor of Scheveningen. On the night before\, the largest Herring Party in the Netherlands was held for the business community. Both events offer a great opportunity to build and maintain relationships and to familiarize foreigners in particular with Dutch culture. The VNC places this event on its cultural activity program. \nVisitors are given the unique opportunity to take a look behind the scenes. For example\, the cold stores open their doors to the public and an impressive stern trawler can be visited. This offers an insight into contemporary fishing and shows how the sector has evolved over the years. There is also a lot of focus on experience on the water. The Flag Day organization is doing everything it can to bring as many fishing boats as possible to Scheveningen\, so that visitors can once again enjoy a beautiful fleet review. \n \nProgram Saturday 20 June 2026 Flag Day \nIn collaboration with the Vlaggetjesdag Foundation\, the VNC has made a special arrangement for members and guests and sponsors on Vlaggetjesdag in the Scheveningen harbor on Saturday Friday 20 June: \nGuests can enjoy the Hollandse Nieuwe and the non-fishing enthusiast is also thought of! \nTime: 10:00 – 14:00\, Location: Scheveningen harbor \n\n10:00 am Welcome\, reception Flag Day board with coffee tea.\n\n\n12:00 Guided tour Scheveningen harbor\, fish auction/cold stores and lunch (with herring or alternative for the non-fish lover.\n\n\n14:00 Activities: The celebration traditionally includes the arrival of the first herring\, fleet review\, fishing crafts\, music performances and various children’s activities.\n\nIf you would like to participate in the program on June 20\, please register quickly: \nThe costs for participation in this program on Saturday 20 June are €36.50 (incl. VAT) per person\, Be quick! The number of places is limited. After registration you will receive a confirmation. SUMMARY:June 8\, 2026 China Café: From Real Estate Crisis to Export Boom: China's New Growth Engine
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the China Café with Heleen Mees on 8 June\, where we will discuss the profound shifts in the Chinese economy and what they mean for the rest of the world and their impact on business. After the bursting of the real estate bubble in 2020\, China was expected to boost its domestic consumption to cushion the loss in the real estate sector. Instead\, the Chinese government opted for a different strategy: further scaling up exports. China now produces about 35% of all global manufacturing\, and that share could rise to almost 50% by 2030. How has China achieved this growth\, and what consequences does this have for global trade flows\, dependencies and competitive relationships? During this evening with Heleen Mees\, this development will be sharply analyzed and placed in a broader context. \n \nLocation: \nStadsbrasserie De Utrechter\, Vredenburg 40\, Utrecht\, 5 minutes walk from Central Station\, parking in Hoog Catharijne P5 Noord \nProgram: \n17.00 – 17.30 Walkin with drinks \n17.30 – 18.30 Interview with Heleen Mees and Q&A \n18.30 – 19.00 Networking with drinks and snacks \nThe language is English \nPrices: \nFree for VNC members \n€15 for non-members \n€7.50 for students \nTickets are non-refundable\, but transferable. \nAbout the speaker: \nHeleen Mees is an economist\, opinion writer and author of four books. She’s a teaching professor at several universities\, including New York University and Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Her research focuses on the impact of China’s rise on the West. Her work has appeared in newspapers and magazines including Foreign Policy\, The New York Times\, The Financial Times\, and Le Monde. She is also the cofounder of an NGO that advocates more women in top jobs. She divides her time between New York and Amsterdam\, but in 2015 she lived a year in Doujiao Hutong in Beijing. \n \nTo register\, please fill in this form: \n \n SUMMARY:China Café South; Robots uncovered\, what’s real\, what’s hype in Europe and China
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 18 in Eindhoven for an engaging China Café where we take a closer look at the world of robotics—beyond the hype. Robots often appear more intelligent than they really are\, but what can they actually do today\, and where are they already making a real impact? In this accessible and thought-provoking session\, we’ll explore how robotics is developing differently in Europe and China. While Europe often emphasizes regulation\, ethics\, and precision\, China is moving at remarkable speed\, driven by large-scale investment and rapid real-world deployment—from factories to everyday services. The rapid progress of humanoid robots in China was recently highlighted by their participation in—and even winning of—a marathon\, illustrating how quickly this technology is moving from experimentation into real-world capability By comparing these approaches\, we’ll uncover not just technological differences\, but also the cultural and economic forces shaping innovation. \nDuring the session\, Jos Elfring\, assistant professor at Eindhoven University of Technology will be interviewed about his insights and experience in this field\, offering an expert perspective on the opportunities and challenges of robotics today. Furthermore\, we will interview Michiel Ebbing\, working for V2Future\, official European distributor of Unitree Robotics\, a global leader in advanced quadruped robots and humanoid robotic systems. He will share his experiences from a business and entrepreneurial point of view. Expect a lively\, balanced conversation that separates fact from fiction and invites you to see robotics from a fresh perspective. \nAfter the interview we have ample opportunity for networking over drinks and snacks\, offered by VNC free of charge. Join us! \n \nProgramm: \n17.00 – 17.30 walkin and networking \n17.30 – 18.30 interview \n18.30 – 19.00 networking \nLanguage is English \nAbout the speakers: \n \nJos Elfring \nJos Elfring earned his PhD in Robotics in 2014 from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology. Over the following decade\, he worked at TNO\, Smart Robotics\, TomTom\, and VDL in roles ranging from researcher to technical lead and architect. A consistent theme throughout his career has been the development of world models that enable autonomous robots to perceive\, understand\, and operate more effectively in complex environments. In 2024\, he transitioned to academia\, joining the Robotics section at Eindhoven University of Technology as an assistant professor. \n \nMichiel Ebbing \nMichiel was born and raised in the Netherlands\, where he studied Business (BSc) and Finance (MSc) at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Alongside his studies\, he learned Mandarin Chinese while living in Beijing\, Shanghai\, Chengdu\, and Chongqing. He started his career at the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China\, followed by a role at the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. His entrepreneurial drive eventually led him to found his own company\, focused on bridging the gap between China and Europe. He became an official partner of Alibaba.com\, helping European businesses tap into the platform’s full potential as a global sourcing and trade hub. That same passion for connecting East and West now drives his work at V2Future\, where he serves as a key player in bringing cutting-edge technology to Europe. V2Future is the official European distributor of Unitree Robotics\, a global leader in advanced quadruped robots and humanoid robotic systems. Michiel is committed to making next-generation robotics accessible and actionable for businesses across Europe. \nLocation\nAcademic Society AG Eindhoven\nParklaan 93\, Eindhoven\nThis China SUMMARY:5 special screenings of "More than Babi Pangang"
DESCRIPTION:This documentary is an ode to the first generation of Chinese Dutch people who have built up an indispensable part of the Dutch street scene through hard work. The typical Chinese-Indonesian restaurant is in danger of disappearing from the Dutch street scene. This is also the case with the restaurant of the father of documentary filmmaker Julie Ng. In More than Babi Pangang she dives into the success and decline of the Chinese-Indonesian restaurant. That search also leads her to unknown parts of her own Chinese background. \nJulie Ng will be present at every film screening to answer questions from the audience and to talk to the Chinese elderly. Since its premiere in February\, this film has received a lot of attention in the Dutch media and has also received the Crystal Film Award. VNC previously conducted an extensive interview with Julie Ng about her film (https://www.vnc-china.nl/tien-jaar-filmen-een-lange-therapiesessie/). \nThanks to our sponsors General Chinese Association in the Netherlands (ACVN)\, National Federation of Chinese Organizations in the Netherlands (LFCON) and Dutch China Trade and Economic Promotion Association (DCTEPA)\, VNC offers these special screenings with Chinese subtitles free of charge to members of VNC\, Chinese elderly organizations and the sponsors. For non-members we ask for a small contribution of 5 euros. Due to a limited number of places\, you must register in advance using the form below. After registration\, you will receive a confirmation for participation by e-mail. Since this film screening is mainly intended for Chinese elderly people or people who want to watch the documentary with them\, we ask friends/acquaintances to help them with the registration if necessary. \nSign up on time\, because FULL = FULL! \nThe tickets will be available soon.

SUMMARY:From China with Love
DESCRIPTION:‘China names Dutch spies online as Nexperia row lingers’; ‘The controversy over the collapsed China spy case explained’; ‘A former insider reveals how China spies on citizens at home and in the US’; and many more… \nThese are just a handful of recent headlines in the media. China is often accused of (industrial) espionage. How do these claims stand up to scrutiny? \nPerhaps not too well. In this CKN Knowledge Session\, China expert Fred Sengers argues that we often go too far in our fear of Chinese products and technology. Many concerns are actually phantom risks: they seem plausible at first glance\, but upon closer inspection turn out not to exist. This distracts from where the real risks lie\, fragments attention and resources\, and leads to excluding Chinese products where it isn’t necessary at all. \nExcluding Chinese tech also creates a false sense of security\, because the danger of espionage or sabotage usually does not come from a factory floor\, but from interconnectivity. State actors do not need a backdoor or kill switch; they exploit weaknesses and carelessness in their targets. \nIn the media\, politics\, and the security domain\, however\, this often leads to overreaction. People say we must not be naïve\, or “better safe than sorry.” But in doing so\, they ignore that the relationship also offers advantages or is sometimes simply unavoidable. Sengers developed a simple traffic light model to assess\, on a case-by-case basis\, where action is required. He tells a nuanced story that fewer and fewer people want to hear—but one they would do well to listen to.

SUMMARY:Lecture by Dr. Ping Foong: ‘To Amuse\, to Amass\, and to Multiply: The Art and Activism of Ai Weiwei’
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to a lecture by Dr Foong Ping on the work of Ai Weiwei\, organised by the Hulsewé-Wazniewski Foundation and Wereldmuseum Amsterdam. Drawing on the exhibition Ai\, Rebel: The Art and Activism of Ai Weiwei\, she will discuss the development of his multifaceted practice. The focus will be on the visual and material strategies that link his oeuvre across several decades. \nRenowned conceptual artist Ai Weiwei (Chinese\, b. 1957) questions forms of power\, disrupts artistic canons\, and challenges political authoritarianism. The first US retrospective in over a decade\, Ai\, Rebel: The Art and Activism of Ai Weiwei at the Seattle Art Museum highlighted 130 works from the 1980s to the 2020s—across performance\, photography\, sculpture\, and video. The exhibition featured large-scale installations made from deconstructed bicycles and images built with LEGO\, and included iconic interventions such as Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn (1995)\, Study of Perspective (1995-2011)\, Sunflower Seeds (2010)\, and Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads (Gold) (2010). Several works made their international debut\, including Shells (2022)\, The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus in Green (2020)\, and The Cover Page of the Mueller Report\, Submitted to Attorney General William Barr by Robert Mueller on March 22\, 2019 (2019). In this talk\, organizing curator Foong Ping evaluates the visual and material hallmarks of this artist’s multifaceted practice to identify some principles that span the decades. \nFoong Ping is Foster Foundation Curator of Chinese Art at the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) and Affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Washington. Dr. Foong received a Ph.D. from Princeton University\, and her experience spans the academic and curatorial realms. She began her career at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as Jane and Morgan Whitney Fellow and then taught at the University of Chicago as Assistant Professor and at the University of California\, Berkeley. Her monograph on eleventh-century Chinese ink painting\, The Efficacious Landscape: On the Authorities of Painting at the Northern Song Court won the Joseph Levenson Book Prize. At SAM Dr. Foong\, alongside two co-curators\, led an extensive effort to expand and modernize the landmark 1933 art deco building of the Seattle Asian Art Museum. The building reopened in 2020 with an innovative thematic presentation of the permanent collection. In 2025\, she organized Ai\, Rebel: The Art and Activism of Ai Weiwei\, the largest US retrospective exhibition on the acclaimed Chinese contemporary artist. \nRegistration go through: hwslectures@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Bicycle Tour: The Chinese Man Who Fell Out the Window and Disappeared
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday April 25 \nTime: 14.00-16.30 \nLocation: The Hague City Center \n \nHow did a Chinese engineer end up seriously injured on the sidewalk of the Prins Mauritslaan? And why was he subsequently kidnapped from the Red Cross Hospital by Chinese diplomats? China expert Fred Sengers takes you on a bicycle tour through The Hague\, visiting the key locations of a case that pushed diplomatic ties between the Netherlands and China to the breaking point: the Welders’ Affair (Lassers-affaire). \nArmed with colorful anecdotes and revealing details\, he will unravel this sensational case that dominated the front pages for weeks back in 1966. Along the way\, he will share another salacious story: how the Dutch Intelligence Service (BVD) spent years infiltrating the Maoist movement\, and how their mole managed to win the trust of the Chinese security service – even shaking hands with Mao. himself. Fred Sengers has published articles on both of these intrigues in the Historisch Nieuwsblad. \nAs the crowning touch\, he will reveals the extreme efforts taken to prevent the discovery of BVD listening devices planted inside the Chinese Embassy. \nMeeting point: Restaurant Gember\, Stadhouderslaan 43 The Hague \nCosts: €15 per person / €10 for VNC members \nNote: Please bring your own bicycle or a rented OV-bike \nRegister here:

SUMMARY:CinemAsia Film Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:From 8 to 12 April\, the 18th CinemAsia Film Festival will take place in Amsterdam: the platform for Asian cinema in the Netherlands. With 44 films from Asia and the diaspora\, screened at Studio/K\, Rialto De Pijp and the Eye Filmmuseum\, the festival offers a rich and up-to-date overview of both established makers and new talent. Half of the filmmakers are women\, with a strong representation in the New Visions section for debut films. \nThe festival theme = Commons: what people share worldwide\, from stories and memories to identity and community. Especially for those interested in China and the wider Chinese-speaking world\, CinemAsia offers a unique opportunity to experience social and cultural developments through film. \nChinese-language highlights:\nClosing film The Waves Will Carry Us (人生海海) by Lau Kek-Huat (Taiwan\, 2025) with Q&A: After years in Taiwan\, Ah Yao returns to Malaysia for his father’s funeral. His return degenerates into chaos and sets him and his brother and sister on a wild\, absurd journey full of mourning\, family tragedies and unexpected twists. With humor and emotional depth\, the film traces a diasporic family history from migration from China to modern-day Malaysia. \nThe Horizons section brings Resurrection (狂野时代) by Bi Gan (China/France\, 2025) a fascinating future in which dreams have been abandoned for immortality. Bel Ami (漂亮朋友) by Geng Jun subtly tells the story of a young man who struggles with loneliness\, desire and societal expectations in a changing urban environment.\nFrom Hong Kong come titles such as Papa (爸爸) by Philip Yung: a gripping drama about loss and guilt after a family tragedy\, and The Way We Talk (看我今天怎麼說) by Adam Wong\, which subtly asks questions about language\, identity and communication within the deaf community. Tracy Choi’s Girlfriends (女孩不平凡) delves into a Hong Kong filmmaker’s struggle between dreams and reality. \nThe New Visions section presents Girl (女孩) by Shu Qi\, a coming-of-age story set in Taiwan in the 1980s\, and Family Matters (我家的事) by Pan Ke-Yin\, a layered portrait of a family spanning multiple generations. Amoeba by Tan Siyou (with Q&A) investigates friendship and identity among young people in Singapore. \nIn the shorts programme: Reclaiming Dragons by Xiang Yu Yeung\, in which a young woman balances between digital and physical realities\, and Every Floor Looks the Same by Gladys Ng\, a playful reflection on modern urban alienation. \nRecommended:\nThe Cambodian opening film Becoming Human is a poetic drama about loss\, transformation and connection. Director Poland Ly is present for Q&A.

SUMMARY:The Art of War
DESCRIPTION:What can we learn from Sunzi’s masterpiece in a time of rising China?\nSunzi’s The Art of War is one of the most influential texts in world literature. For the first time\, this classic work has now been translated directly from Chinese into Dutch by Mark Leenhouts\, winner of the prestigious Martinus Nijhoff Translation Prize 2025. But what is this book actually about? And what does Sunzi’s strategic thinking mean today\, in a world where China is playing an increasingly prominent role? \nDuring this event\, organized in collaboration with the Leiden Asia Center\, we will dive into the history\, philosophy and current relevance of The Art of War. We discuss the book’s origins\, its translation challenges\, and the lessons it offers for modern conflict and diplomacy. With contributions from Mark Leenhouts\, Frans-Paul van der Putten (geopolitical analyst)\, and Frank Osinga (Professor of War Studies at Leiden University)\, we reflect on the application of Sunzi’s principles in present-day China and international politics. \nProgram \n\nIntroduction by Mark Leenhouts: What is The Art of War? An exploration of the historical context\, the translation challenges\, and the timeless principles of Sunzi. \nLecture and discussion: Frans-Paul van der Putten and Frank Osinga analyse how Sunzi’s strategies are applied in geopolitics and military science today\, particularly in the rise of China as a global power.\nPanel discussion: What can we learn from Sunzi’s emphasis on smart strategy\, intelligence\, and avoiding direct confrontation? And how do these lessons translate into contemporary conflict and diplomacy? \n\n  \nAbout the speakers: \n\nDr. Mark Leenhouts is a sinologist\, literary translator\, and expert in Chinese language and culture. He studied at Leiden University\, Université Paris 7\, and Nankai University in Tianjin. Leenhouts obtained his PhD in contemporary Chinese literature and is co-founder of Het trage vuur\, a journal for Chinese literature. As a translator\, he received the Dutch Foundation for Literature’s Translation Prize (2012) and the Filter Translation Prize (2022) for The Dream of the Red Room\, a monumental eighteenth-century classic. His translation of The Art of War (Sunzi) was published by Athenaeum in the autumn of 2025\, directly from Chinese and with in-depth commentary. Leenhouts has been writing about Chinese literature for de Volkskrant since 2000. \n\n  \n\nDr Frans-Paul van der Putten is a researcher and advisor in the field of China and geopolitics. He studied history in Leiden\, where he obtained his PhD in 2001 for research on political business strategies in China before 1942. From 2007-2022\, he worked as a China specialist at the Clingendael Institute\, where he was co-founder and coordinator of the Clingendael China Centre. Van der Putten is the author of the book ‘The resurrection of China: from prey to world power’ (Prometheus Publishers). He is an external expert at Clingendael and at the LeidenAsiaCentre. \n\n  \n\nCommodore (bd) Prof. Dr. Frans Osinga obtained his PhD in Leiden and was appointed professor by special appointment of War Studies at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) on Leiden University’s Campus in The Hague in 2019. Since 2023\, he has been a professor at Leiden University. From 2010 to 2023\, he was Professor of Military Sciences at the Netherlands Defence Academy and head of the department of the same name. \n\n  \nYou can register via this link: https://leidenasiacentre.nl/event/de-kunst-van-het-oorlogvoeren/

In 2013 she founded Histotainment\, a cultural-historical company specializing in lectures on High-Society in the distant past. Both Europe and China are covered.\nAt the moment there are more than 40 lectures\, in combination with ‘High-Food’ (home-cooked lunches or dinners) of the country in question. DESCRIPTION:Genre: documentary\nLength: 71 min.\nLanguage spoken: Dutch\, Cantonese \nIn More Than Babi Pangang\, the Chinese-Dutch documentary maker Julie Ng investigates the success and imminent demise of the Chinese-Indonesian restaurant\, based on Golden House\, her father’s restaurant in Rozenburg. What starts as a search for the origins of the dish babi pangang\, grows into a personal and emotional exploration of her cultural and culinary identity as a Chinese Dutchman. Why do Chinese-Indonesian restaurants serve dishes that Chinese people don’t eat at home? What does that say about adaptation\, perception and the way in which cultures relate to each other? And why is it that many Dutch people think of ‘the Chinese’ mainly as babi pangang – a dish that has emerged from the cross-pollination of three cultures: the Chinese\, the Indonesian and the Dutch. The dish has an Indian origin and name\, was adapted by Chinese restaurateurs and is fully tailored to the taste of their Dutch customers. \nMore Than Babi Pangang is an ode to the first generation of Chinese Dutch people who worked hard to build an indispensable part of the Dutch street scene. At the same time\, it is an invitation to look beyond the takeaway menu.
