SUMMARY:5 special screenings of "More than Babi Pangang"
DESCRIPTION:This documentary is an ode to the first generation of Chinese Dutch people who have built up an indispensable part of the Dutch street scene through hard work. The typical Chinese-Indonesian restaurant is in danger of disappearing from the Dutch street scene. This is also the case with the restaurant of the father of documentary filmmaker Julie Ng. In More than Babi Pangang she dives into the success and decline of the Chinese-Indonesian restaurant. That search also leads her to unknown parts of her own Chinese background. \nJulie Ng will be present at every film screening to answer questions from the audience and to talk to the Chinese elderly. Since its premiere in February\, this film has received a lot of attention in the Dutch media and has also received the Crystal Film Award. VNC previously conducted an extensive interview with Julie Ng about her film (https://www.vnc-china.nl/tien-jaar-filmen-een-lange-therapiesessie/). \nThanks to our sponsors General Chinese Association in the Netherlands (ACVN)\, National Federation of Chinese Organizations in the Netherlands (LFCON) and Dutch China Trade and Economic Promotion Association (DCTEPA)\, VNC offers these special screenings with Chinese subtitles free of charge to members of VNC\, Chinese elderly organizations and the sponsors. For non-members we ask for a small contribution of 5 euros. Due to a limited number of places\, you must register in advance using the form below. After registration\, you will receive a confirmation for participation by e-mail. Since this film screening is mainly intended for Chinese elderly people or people who want to watch the documentary with them\, we ask friends/acquaintances to help them with the registration if necessary. \nSign up on time\, because FULL = FULL!

SUMMARY:June 8\, 2026 China Café: From Real Estate Crisis to Export Boom: China's New Growth Engine
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the China Café with Heleen Mees on 8 June\, where we will discuss the profound shifts in the Chinese economy and what they mean for the rest of the world and their impact on business. After the bursting of the real estate bubble in 2020\, China was expected to boost its domestic consumption to cushion the loss in the real estate sector. Instead\, the Chinese government opted for a different strategy: further scaling up exports. China now produces about 35% of all global manufacturing\, and that share could rise to almost 50% by 2030. How has China achieved this growth\, and what consequences does this have for global trade flows\, dependencies and competitive relationships? During this evening with Heleen Mees\, this development will be sharply analyzed and placed in a broader context. \n \nLocation: \nStadsbrasserie De Utrechter\, Vredenburg 40\, Utrecht\, 5 minutes walk from Central Station\, parking in Hoog Catharijne P5 Noord \nProgram: \n17.00 – 17.30 Walkin with drinks \n17.30 – 18.30 Interview with Heleen Mees and Q&A \n18.30 – 19.00 Networking with drinks and snacks \nThe language is English \nPrices: \nFree for VNC members \n€15 for non-members \n€7.50 for students \nTickets are non-refundable\, but transferable. \nAbout the speaker: \nHeleen Mees is an economist\, opinion writer and author of four books. She’s a teaching professor at several universities\, including New York University and Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Her research focuses on the impact of China’s rise on the West. Her work has appeared in newspapers and magazines including Foreign Policy\, The New York Times\, The Financial Times\, and Le Monde. She is also the cofounder of an NGO that advocates more women in top jobs. She divides her time between New York and Amsterdam\, but in 2015 she lived a year in Doujiao Hutong in Beijing. \n \nTo register\, please fill in this form:

SUMMARY:FLAG DAY SATURDAY 20 JUNE SCHEVENINGEN
DESCRIPTION:Vlaggetjesdag is an annual large-scale folk festival in Scheveningen that celebrates the arrival of the Hollandse Nieuwe herring. It is a combination of culture\, history and fish promotion\, where the harbor is full of decorated fishing boats and thousands of people enjoy music\, markets and fresh herring. For Dutch and foreigners\, it is always fascinating to attend this typical Dutch tradition. Unlike in previous decades\, in 2026 the processing of herring will take place with stern trawlers and cold stores. The traditional auction of the First Barrel of Herring still takes place in Scheveningen. \nThe official opening of the flag day event will take place on Saturday\, June 20 in 2026 in the harbor of Scheveningen. On the night before\, the largest Herring Party in the Netherlands was held for the business community. Both events offer a great opportunity to build and maintain relationships and to familiarize foreigners in particular with Dutch culture. The VNC places this event on its cultural activity program. \nVisitors are given the unique opportunity to take a look behind the scenes. For example\, the cold stores open their doors to the public and an impressive stern trawler can be visited. This offers an insight into contemporary fishing and shows how the sector has evolved over the years. There is also a lot of focus on experience on the water. The Flag Day organization is doing everything it can to bring as many fishing boats as possible to Scheveningen\, so that visitors can once again enjoy a beautiful fleet review. \n \nProgram Saturday 20 June 2026 Flag Day \nIn collaboration with the Vlaggetjesdag Foundation\, the VNC has made a special arrangement for members and guests and sponsors on Vlaggetjesdag in the Scheveningen harbor on Saturday Friday 20 June: \nGuests can enjoy the Hollandse Nieuwe and the non-fishing enthusiast is also thought of! \nTime: 10:00 – 14:00\, Location: Scheveningen harbor \n\n10:00 am Welcome\, reception Flag Day board with coffee tea.\n\n\n12:00 Guided tour Scheveningen harbor\, fish auction/cold stores and lunch (with herring or alternative for the non-fish lover.\n\n\n14:00 Activities: The celebration traditionally includes the arrival of the first herring\, fleet review\, fishing crafts\, music performances and various children’s activities.\n\nIf you would like to participate in the program on June 20\, please register quickly: \nThe costs for participation in this program on Saturday 20 June are €36.50 (incl. SUMMARY:Lecture: "The Classical Chinese Gardens". With Chinese 3-course lunch in ... Brabant! Saturday 27 June.
DESCRIPTION:Chinese gardens developed more than 3000 years ago. These include the extensive “impressive gardens” of the Chinese emperors as well as the more intimate gardens\, laid out by scholars\, poets\, former officials and merchants. These gardens are meant to reflect and escape from the outside world. \n \nThe starting point here is to express harmony between man and nature. And all this in an idealized miniature landscape that usually contains a number of fixed elements. Curious about which elements are always present in a Chinese classical garden? Here’s a sneak peek: the many zig-zag paths are not only decorative\, but they also have a very special function! Which ones? You will hear it during the Histotainment lecture. \n \nWe start in the morning from 10.30 am with coffee with homemade “Tartelette Chinoise” (with Lychees)\, followed by the lecture at 11.00 am. With a demonstration of objects – tailored to the lecture.\nAfter the lecture\, a short visit to our -small- Chinese garden with striking plants is possible.\nThis is followed by the traditional 3-course lunch\, with inspiration from Chinese cuisine\n*As a starter this time a Chinese vegetable soup with pak choi\, Tong-Ho and shrimps.\n*This is followed by the “Dragon Pie” with 3 types of mushrooms\, including black Chinese mushrooms and a garnish with Lotus root.\n*The dessert is a nod to Chinese history: how about a mandarin bavarois with loquats and go-ji berries? \nMango Dessert China

OEY Toen Ping will take you to Rotterdam to further discover the menu of restaurant SanSan. This restaurant offers dishes of Sichuan cuisine. Sichuan cuisine is known to most for its hot (spicy) dishes\, but Sichuan cuisine also has many dishes that are non-spicy. Both types of dishes will be on the table at this meal. \nPrior to dinner\, your host OEY Toen Ping will show and tell you about Chinese culture objects. \nPrices:\nVNC members: € 36 per person\, excl. drinks and dessert \nNon-members: € 45 per person\, excl. drinks and dessert \n Your host is OEY Then Ping. \nDrs. OEY When Ping was born in the Netherlands\, he went to primary school in Jakarta and studied sociology and sinology. In 1975\, he traveled to China for the first time with a study group from Tilburg University. Since then\, he has visited China dozens of times and experienced China’s change and modernization up close. \nDuring his trips to China\, he was able to enjoy hundreds of meals. He was often explained about the specialness\, ingredients and preparation method of the dishes. Curious about more knowledge about Chinese cuisine (in China there are 8 main cuisines)\, Mr. Oey visited training and schools for chefs and was able to take a look in many Chinese kitchens. \nIn the Chinese restaurants in the Netherlands\, in addition to the ‘Chin.-Ind. dishes’\, more and more ‘original’ Chinese dishes are being included on the menus and we see (small) specialized restaurants appearing in many cities\, which promote dishes from Chinese regions. Curious about this new offer\, he started a search for ‘the flavors of China in the Netherlands’. After a while\, the idea for the VNC China Eating Club was born: let’s look for the ‘flavors of China in the Netherlands’ together with more people. \nMr. Oey will take you on a journey in the Netherlands to taste the special Chinese dishes and will share his knowledge about Chinese food with you. \nRegister here:

DESCRIPTION:22 August guided tour of the photo exhibition Flowers in the mirror by Ruben Lundgren 11:00-13:00 Fotomuseum Den Haag\, Stadhouderslaan 43 2517 HV The Hague. \n  \nEspecially for the Netherlands China Association\, photographer and curator Ruben Lundgren takes us to this special solo exhibition in the Netherlands. \n  \nWith the exhibition: Flowers in the Mirror\, photographer and curator Ruben Lundgren (The Netherlands\, 1983) reflects on twenty years of working and living in China. SUMMARY:September 21st\, China Café about Responsible Business
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Mismatch: Building Responsible Business Between Europe and China \n \nWhat does responsible business mean in Europe and China? While expectations around social and environmental impact are growing in both markets\, the underlying priorities can differ significantly. In the EU\, the focus is strongly on individual and labour rights\, while in China corporate responsibility is more closely linked to broader economic and social development goals. \nAt this China Café on 21 September\, Vera Moll partner at KPMG and Congrui Qiao researcher at China Knowledge Network will use real-life examples to show how these differences can lead to misunderstandings\, as well as financial and reputational risks. More importantly\, they will explore how companies can navigate these cross-border frictions successfully and turn them into strategic opportunities. \nPlease note New Location: \nCafé De Apotheek\, Catharijnesingel 57\, Utrecht\n5-minute walk from Utrecht Central Station. Parking is available at Hoog Catharijne P1 \nProgramme:\n17:00 – 17:30 Walk-in with drinks\n17:30 – 18:30 Interview with Vera Moll and Congrui Qiao and Q&A\n18:30 – 19:00 Networking with drinks and snacks \nLanguage:\nThe event will be held in English. \nAdmission:\nFree for VNC members\n€15 for non-members\n€7.50 for students \nTickets are non-refundable but may be transferred to someone else. \nAbout the speakers: \n \nVera Moll is a Partner in KPMG NLs Sustainability Reporting & Assurance Group. She leads the reporting advisory part of the team that is focused not only on reporting\, but also on the broader landscape of Sustainability regulations in Europe. On a daily basis she serves corporate clients navigating this landscape and supporting them in making effective choices that drive and support the ambition and strategic opportunities of a company. Next to this\, she heads up the sustainability group of the EU China desk\, supporting Chinese companies active in the EU market. \n \nQiao Cong-rui is a legal researcher and policy advisor specialising in sustainable law and development. She currently serves as Principal Investigator for the Dutch government-funded project\, Responsible Business Conduct in China\, the EU and 10 Partner Regions\, and acts as a strategic advisor to the All-China New Energy Chamber of Commerce. Cong-rui holds a PhD in International and European Law from Utrecht University (2018) and a University Teaching Qualification from Free University of Amsterdam (2023). SUMMARY:Book presentation Garrie van Pinxteren: 'Control and delete. Memories of authoritarian China'
DESCRIPTION:On Monday 5 October\, the Netherlands-China Association (VNC)\, in collaboration with Leiden Asia Centre (LAC)\, is organising a book presentation with journalist and China expert Garrie van Pinxteren. \nOn the occasion of the publication of her new book ‘Control and delete. Memories of authoritarian China’ \, Van Pinxteren talks to LAC director Floris Harm about her many years of experience with China and about the far-reaching changes the country has undergone in recent decades. \nAs a student\, Van Pinxteren experienced the first phase of China’s opening in 1982. After Mao Zedong’s death\, there was room for reforms\, economic growth and remarkable social dynamics. More than forty years later\, in 2025\, she will leave China again as a correspondent. In the meantime\, the country has changed dramatically and Xi Jinping has further concentrated power. The space for dissenting opinions and memories has greatly decreased. \nIn ‘Control and delete’ \, Van Pinxteren investigates what this development means for daily life. Who decides what people are allowed to remember? What happens when the state tries to determine what should be forgotten? And how does a society change when political control penetrates more and more into personal life? \nDetails \nWhen: Monday 5 October\, 19:30 – 21:00\nWhere: Wijnhaven 3.46\, Turfmarkt 99\, 2511 DP The Hague \nProgramme \n19:00–19:30 — Walk-in\n19:30–19:40 — Introduction VNC chair Monique Knapen\n19:40–20:15 — Book presentation: Garrie van Pinxteren in conversation with LAC Director Floris Harm\n20:15–20:55 — Q&A (moderator Floris Harm)\n20:55-21:00 — Closing: Monique Knapen\, chair VNC \nAbout the speaker \nPhoto: Merlijn DoomernikAll rights reserved\nGarrie van Pinxteren is a journalist and sinologist. She has been involved with China for about 45 years now and lived there for more than fifteen years. As a correspondent in Beijing\, she wrote and reported for NRC Handelsblad\, the NOS and Radio Netherlands Worldwide\, among others. Previously\, she was director of the Dutch Business Support Office in Hangzhou. \nAfter her return to the Netherlands\, Van Pinxteren remained active as a journalist. She is a senior research associate at the Clingendael Institute. From her broad experience\, she explains developments in China and their influence on the outside world. \n \nThis event is organised in collaboration with Leiden Asia Centre (LAC).\n \nRegistration SUMMARY:China Café South; China: still a market full of opportunities? 8 October - Eindhoven
DESCRIPTION:What do the figures say\, what does practice say? What does the Benelux Business Survey reveal? \nHow do Benelux companies experience doing business in China? Where are the opportunities\, what challenges do they encounter and how do they see the future of their activities in the Chinese market? \nDuring the next China Café on October 8 in Eindhoven\, we will dive into the results of the Sino Benelux Business Survey\, conducted by MSA Asia and Benelux Chamber of Commerce. A valuable indicator of the business climate in China\, based on the experiences and expectations of companies that operate there on a daily basis. \nBut what do the figures really tell us? And how do the results relate to the experiences of entrepreneurs and financial experts in practice? \n \nJonathan Xu of Benelux Chamber of Commerce and Brian Blömer\, Partner at MSA Advisory Asia\, present the key findings of the study. Then\, two survey participants bring the numbers to life with their own experiences: Mathijs de Boer\, International Desk Manager Asia at Rabobank\, and Tianhao Hu\, Head of Financial Control at Rituals (subject to change). \nThe Chinese government also has its say. Jin Yuan\, Economic & Commercial Councellor of the Chinese Embassy\, reflects on the results from the perspective of the Chinese government. How does China view the concerns and expectations of foreign companies? And what developments could influence the future business environment? \nA fascinating meeting in which research results\, practical experiences and the Chinese government perspective come together. With plenty of room for questions\, discussion and exchanging experiences. \nAre you active in the Chinese market\, are you considering doing business with China or do you want to better understand how the business climate is developing? Then you can’t miss this China Café! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nThanks to our sponsor St Anny Food \nChina Café is made possible by the involvement of St Anny Food. Thanks to their support\, we can continue to provide a meeting place where entrepreneurs\, experts and other interested parties in China come together to exchange knowledge and experiences and make new connections. \n\n\n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\n\n\n\n17.00 – 17.30 hrs: Walk-in and networking\, first drink offered by St Anny Food \n17.30 – 18.30 hrs: Interview \n18.30 – 19.00 hrs: Networking\, with Chinese snacks from St Anny Food \nAbout the speakers \n \nYuan Jin\n Economic & Commercial Council of the Chinese Embassy\n \n \nJonathan Xu\nGeneral Manager Benelux Chamber of Commerce in China (Shanghai) \n \nBrian Blömer\nPartner MSA Advisory Asia \n \nMathijs de Boer\n\, International Desk Manager\, Asia\, Rabobank \n \nTianhao Hu (TBC) Head of Financial Control\, Rituals \nREGISTER HERE: \n \n \n CHINA CAFE 8 oktober Eindhoven - Sino Benelux Business Survey\n \n \n URLThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Naam(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n E-mailadres(Required)\n \n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n Hoe heb je van dit evenement gehoord?VNC WebsiteVNC nieuwsbriefSociale mediaMond tot mondreclameZoekmachine (Google\, Bing\, enz.)AndersAnders:Bedrijfsnaam8 oktober China Cafe Zuid - Leden VNC Ticket\n \n \n Price:\n \n \n \n AantalPlease enter a number greater than or equal to 1.8 oktober China Cafe Zuid - Standaard Ticket\n \n \n Price:\n \n \n \n AantalPlease enter a number greater than or equal to 1.18 mei China Cafe Zuid - Studenten Ticket\n \n \n Price:\n \n \n \n AantalPlease enter a number greater than or equal to 1.Totaal\n \n BetaalmethodeiDEAL | Wero\n American ExpressMasterCardVisaSupported Credit Cards: American Express\, MasterCard\, Visa\n \n Card Number\n \n \n \n Expiration Date\n \n \n                                                 \n Security Code\n \n \n \n Cardholder Name\n \n Versturen
