SUMMARY:From China with Love
DESCRIPTION:‘China names Dutch spies online as Nexperia row lingers’; ‘The controversy over the collapsed China spy case explained’; ‘A former insider reveals how China spies on citizens at home and in the US’; and many more… \nThese are just a handful of recent headlines in the media. China is often accused of (industrial) espionage. How do these claims stand up to scrutiny? \nPerhaps not too well. In this CKN Knowledge Session\, China expert Fred Sengers argues that we often go too far in our fear of Chinese products and technology. Many concerns are actually phantom risks: they seem plausible at first glance\, but upon closer inspection turn out not to exist. This distracts from where the real risks lie\, fragments attention and resources\, and leads to excluding Chinese products where it isn’t necessary at all. \nExcluding Chinese tech also creates a false sense of security\, because the danger of espionage or sabotage usually does not come from a factory floor\, but from interconnectivity. State actors do not need a backdoor or kill switch; they exploit weaknesses and carelessness in their targets. \nIn the media\, politics\, and the security domain\, however\, this often leads to overreaction. People say we must not be naïve\, or “better safe than sorry.” But in doing so\, they ignore that the relationship also offers advantages or is sometimes simply unavoidable. Sengers developed a simple traffic light model to assess\, on a case-by-case basis\, where action is required. He tells a nuanced story that fewer and fewer people want to hear—but one they would do well to listen to.

SUMMARY:Lecture by Dr. Ping Foong: ‘To Amuse\, to Amass\, and to Multiply: The Art and Activism of Ai Weiwei’
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to a lecture by Dr Foong Ping on the work of Ai Weiwei\, organised by the Hulsewé-Wazniewski Foundation and Wereldmuseum Amsterdam. Drawing on the exhibition Ai\, Rebel: The Art and Activism of Ai Weiwei\, she will discuss the development of his multifaceted practice. The focus will be on the visual and material strategies that link his oeuvre across several decades. \nRenowned conceptual artist Ai Weiwei (Chinese\, b. 1957) questions forms of power\, disrupts artistic canons\, and challenges political authoritarianism. The first US retrospective in over a decade\, Ai\, Rebel: The Art and Activism of Ai Weiwei at the Seattle Art Museum highlighted 130 works from the 1980s to the 2020s—across performance\, photography\, sculpture\, and video. The exhibition featured large-scale installations made from deconstructed bicycles and images built with LEGO\, and included iconic interventions such as Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn (1995)\, Study of Perspective (1995-2011)\, Sunflower Seeds (2010)\, and Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads (Gold) (2010). Several works made their international debut\, including Shells (2022)\, The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus in Green (2020)\, and The Cover Page of the Mueller Report\, Submitted to Attorney General William Barr by Robert Mueller on March 22\, 2019 (2019). In this talk\, organizing curator Foong Ping evaluates the visual and material hallmarks of this artist’s multifaceted practice to identify some principles that span the decades. \nFoong Ping is Foster Foundation Curator of Chinese Art at the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) and Affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Washington. Dr. Foong received a Ph.D. from Princeton University\, and her experience spans the academic and curatorial realms. She began her career at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as Jane and Morgan Whitney Fellow and then taught at the University of Chicago as Assistant Professor and at the University of California\, Berkeley. Her monograph on eleventh-century Chinese ink painting\, The Efficacious Landscape: On the Authorities of Painting at the Northern Song Court won the Joseph Levenson Book Prize. At SAM Dr. Foong\, alongside two co-curators\, led an extensive effort to expand and modernize the landmark 1933 art deco building of the Seattle Asian Art Museum. The building reopened in 2020 with an innovative thematic presentation of the permanent collection. In 2025\, she organized Ai\, Rebel: The Art and Activism of Ai Weiwei\, the largest US retrospective exhibition on the acclaimed Chinese contemporary artist. \nRegistration go through: hwslectures@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Bicycle Tour: The Chinese Man Who Fell Out the Window and Disappeared
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday April 25 \nTime: 14.00-16.30 \nLocation: The Hague City Center \n \nHow did a Chinese engineer end up seriously injured on the sidewalk of the Prins Mauritslaan? And why was he subsequently kidnapped from the Red Cross Hospital by Chinese diplomats? China expert Fred Sengers takes you on a bicycle tour through The Hague\, visiting the key locations of a case that pushed diplomatic ties between the Netherlands and China to the breaking point: the Welders’ Affair (Lassers-affaire). \nArmed with colorful anecdotes and revealing details\, he will unravel this sensational case that dominated the front pages for weeks back in 1966. Along the way\, he will share another salacious story: how the Dutch Intelligence Service (BVD) spent years infiltrating the Maoist movement\, and how their mole managed to win the trust of the Chinese security service – even shaking hands with Mao. himself. Fred Sengers has published articles on both of these intrigues in the Historisch Nieuwsblad. \nAs the crowning touch\, he will reveals the extreme efforts taken to prevent the discovery of BVD listening devices planted inside the Chinese Embassy. \nMeeting point: Restaurant Gember\, Stadhouderslaan 43 The Hague \nCosts: €15 per person / €10 for VNC members \nNote: Please bring your own bicycle or a rented OV-bike \nRegister here:

SUMMARY:CinemAsia Film Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:From 8 to 12 April\, the 18th CinemAsia Film Festival will take place in Amsterdam: the platform for Asian cinema in the Netherlands. With 44 films from Asia and the diaspora\, screened at Studio/K\, Rialto De Pijp and the Eye Filmmuseum\, the festival offers a rich and up-to-date overview of both established makers and new talent. Half of the filmmakers are women\, with a strong representation in the New Visions section for debut films. \nThe festival theme = Commons: what people share worldwide\, from stories and memories to identity and community. Especially for those interested in China and the wider Chinese-speaking world\, CinemAsia offers a unique opportunity to experience social and cultural developments through film. \nChinese-language highlights:\nClosing film The Waves Will Carry Us (人生海海) by Lau Kek-Huat (Taiwan\, 2025) with Q&A: After years in Taiwan\, Ah Yao returns to Malaysia for his father’s funeral. His return degenerates into chaos and sets him and his brother and sister on a wild\, absurd journey full of mourning\, family tragedies and unexpected twists. With humor and emotional depth\, the film traces a diasporic family history from migration from China to modern-day Malaysia. \nThe Horizons section brings Resurrection (狂野时代) by Bi Gan (China/France\, 2025) a fascinating future in which dreams have been abandoned for immortality. Bel Ami (漂亮朋友) by Geng Jun subtly tells the story of a young man who struggles with loneliness\, desire and societal expectations in a changing urban environment.\nFrom Hong Kong come titles such as Papa (爸爸) by Philip Yung: a gripping drama about loss and guilt after a family tragedy\, and The Way We Talk (看我今天怎麼說) by Adam Wong\, which subtly asks questions about language\, identity and communication within the deaf community. Tracy Choi’s Girlfriends (女孩不平凡) delves into a Hong Kong filmmaker’s struggle between dreams and reality. \nThe New Visions section presents Girl (女孩) by Shu Qi\, a coming-of-age story set in Taiwan in the 1980s\, and Family Matters (我家的事) by Pan Ke-Yin\, a layered portrait of a family spanning multiple generations. Amoeba by Tan Siyou (with Q&A) investigates friendship and identity among young people in Singapore. \nIn the shorts programme: Reclaiming Dragons by Xiang Yu Yeung\, in which a young woman balances between digital and physical realities\, and Every Floor Looks the Same by Gladys Ng\, a playful reflection on modern urban alienation. \nRecommended:\nThe Cambodian opening film Becoming Human is a poetic drama about loss\, transformation and connection. Director Poland Ly is present for Q&A.

SUMMARY:The Art of War
DESCRIPTION:What can we learn from Sunzi’s masterpiece in a time of rising China?\nSunzi’s The Art of War is one of the most influential texts in world literature. For the first time\, this classic work has now been translated directly from Chinese into Dutch by Mark Leenhouts\, winner of the prestigious Martinus Nijhoff Translation Prize 2025. But what is this book actually about? And what does Sunzi’s strategic thinking mean today\, in a world where China is playing an increasingly prominent role? \nDuring this event\, organized in collaboration with the Leiden Asia Center\, we will dive into the history\, philosophy and current relevance of The Art of War. We discuss the book’s origins\, its translation challenges\, and the lessons it offers for modern conflict and diplomacy. With contributions from Mark Leenhouts\, Frans-Paul van der Putten (geopolitical analyst)\, and Frank Osinga (Professor of War Studies at Leiden University)\, we reflect on the application of Sunzi’s principles in present-day China and international politics. \nProgram \n\nIntroduction by Mark Leenhouts: What is The Art of War? An exploration of the historical context\, the translation challenges\, and the timeless principles of Sunzi. \nLecture and discussion: Frans-Paul van der Putten and Frank Osinga analyse how Sunzi’s strategies are applied in geopolitics and military science today\, particularly in the rise of China as a global power.\nPanel discussion: What can we learn from Sunzi’s emphasis on smart strategy\, intelligence\, and avoiding direct confrontation? And how do these lessons translate into contemporary conflict and diplomacy? \n\n  \nAbout the speakers: \n\nDr. Mark Leenhouts is a sinologist\, literary translator\, and expert in Chinese language and culture. He studied at Leiden University\, Université Paris 7\, and Nankai University in Tianjin. Leenhouts obtained his PhD in contemporary Chinese literature and is co-founder of Het trage vuur\, a journal for Chinese literature. As a translator\, he received the Dutch Foundation for Literature’s Translation Prize (2012) and the Filter Translation Prize (2022) for The Dream of the Red Room\, a monumental eighteenth-century classic. His translation of The Art of War (Sunzi) was published by Athenaeum in the autumn of 2025\, directly from Chinese and with in-depth commentary. Leenhouts has been writing about Chinese literature for de Volkskrant since 2000. \n\n  \n\nDr Frans-Paul van der Putten is a researcher and advisor in the field of China and geopolitics. He studied history in Leiden\, where he obtained his PhD in 2001 for research on political business strategies in China before 1942. From 2007-2022\, he worked as a China specialist at the Clingendael Institute\, where he was co-founder and coordinator of the Clingendael China Centre. Van der Putten is the author of the book ‘The resurrection of China: from prey to world power’ (Prometheus Publishers). He is an external expert at Clingendael and at the LeidenAsiaCentre. \n\n  \n\nCommodore (bd) Prof. Dr. Frans Osinga obtained his PhD in Leiden and was appointed professor by special appointment of War Studies at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) on Leiden University’s Campus in The Hague in 2019. Since 2023\, he has been a professor at Leiden University. From 2010 to 2023\, he was Professor of Military Sciences at the Netherlands Defence Academy and head of the department of the same name. \n\n  \nYou can register via this link: https://leidenasiacentre.nl/event/de-kunst-van-het-oorlogvoeren/

And experience how tea and cheese create surprising harmony between cultures. \nAbout the speakers:\n \nAmeing Tang graduated as a food technologist and now works as a regulatory advisor for cosmetics companies\, but her true passion is tea. As a certified tea sommelier\, she has traveled through renowned tea production areas in China and Japan\, even making her own green tea along the way. Curious and dedicated\, Ameing continues to deepen her knowledge of tea traditions\, flavors\, and techniques. She specializes in authentic Chinese tea culture\, from the sophisticated rituals of Gong Fu Cha brewing to the mindfulness\, sensory art of tasting. For her\, tea is an invitation to slow down\, connect\, and experience each cup with intention and awareness. She loves to guide others in this world of depth\, heritage and quiet beauty. \nAfter many years in education\, Joyce van der Zalm chose to follow her heart and devote herself entirely to tea. She earned her Tea Sommelier degree and continues to specialize in Chinese tea through advanced studies. She has made her own green and black tea\, an experience that gave her deep respect for the craftsmanship and patience behind each leaf. Her travels to tea-growing areas in China and Taiwan and visits to international tea festivals have enriched her understanding of the cultural roots of tea. With her natural affinity for taste\, Joyce also completed a professional cheese training program. There she discovered how beautifully tea and cheese can complement each other when they are thoughtfully combined. For Joyce\, tea stands for peace\, connection and shared moments. It creates space to slow down\, listen and really meet each other. \n \nBuy your tickets here:

SUMMARY:Chinese New Year in Brabant! February 21 : Presentation "Dragons\, Horses and Priests".
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, dragons and horses have played an important role in Chinese history. On the occasion of the Chinese New Year\, the Histotainment lecture (in Brabant) goes back to the beginning of the Qing rule:\n the Ming dynasty has been expelled\, but there are still many rebellious hotspots in the country itself. Emperor Kangxi must therefore pull out all the stops to unify the new Chinese empire. And then expand.\nHow will he tackle the problems? You will hear it during this fascinating lecture by cultural historian Drs. Ingrid van Leeuwen.\nThis is followed by the homemade\, Chinese 3-course lunch.\nProgram:\n10.30 a.m.: Reception with coffee and Lychees-tartelettes. 11.00 a.m.: Presentation “Dragons\, Horses\, Priests”\, followed by Chinese music (not live) 12.30 p.m.: Homemade lunch with an adaptation of Chinese dishes.\nPie with black mushrooms\, lotus root and a dessert with Goji berries and fruits are served. 2.30 p.m.: closing.\nRegistration until 19 February.\nAbout the speaker: after successfully completing the History study at Radboud University\, Ingrid van Leeuwen worked in education for many years. In 2013 she founded Histotainment\, a cultural-historical company specializing in lectures on High-Society in the distant past. Both Europe and China are covered.\nAt the moment there are more than 40 lectures\, in combination with ‘High-Food’ (home-cooked lunches or dinners) of the country in question. SUMMARY:'Meer Dan Babi Pangang' Release
DESCRIPTION:Genre: documentary\nLength: 71 min.\nLanguage spoken: Dutch\, Cantonese \nIn More Than Babi Pangang\, the Chinese-Dutch documentary maker Julie Ng investigates the success and imminent demise of the Chinese-Indonesian restaurant\, based on Golden House\, her father’s restaurant in Rozenburg. What starts as a search for the origins of the dish babi pangang\, grows into a personal and emotional exploration of her cultural and culinary identity as a Chinese Dutchman. Why do Chinese-Indonesian restaurants serve dishes that Chinese people don’t eat at home? What does that say about adaptation\, perception and the way in which cultures relate to each other? And why is it that many Dutch people think of ‘the Chinese’ mainly as babi pangang – a dish that has emerged from the cross-pollination of three cultures: the Chinese\, the Indonesian and the Dutch. The dish has an Indian origin and name\, was adapted by Chinese restaurateurs and is fully tailored to the taste of their Dutch customers. \nMore Than Babi Pangang is an ode to the first generation of Chinese Dutch people who worked hard to build an indispensable part of the Dutch street scene. At the same time\, it is an invitation to look beyond the takeaway menu.

SUMMARY:An evening with Jung Chang\, author of the bestseller "Wild Swans"
DESCRIPTION:“Wild Swans” by Jung Chang was a bestseller in the nineties. It was a book that defined a generation – the story of “three daughters of China”: Jung\, her mother and her grandmother\, and their lives during a century of revolution. Chang’s new book “Fly\, Wild Swans” tells what happened next. This evening Jung Chang will talk about this. \nSign up via https://www.spui25.nl/programma/een-avond-met-jung-chang-auteur-van-de-bestseller-wilde-zwanen \n“Fly\, wild swans” is in many ways Jung’s love letter to her mother. With flashbacks to her family’s experiences in communist China\, Chang offers an account of her research into Mao Zedong’s genocidal regime\, the many stories she discovered\, and the political consequences of publishing her biography. Against the backdrop of China’s development\, from the relative freedoms of the late 1970s and the unbridled capitalism of the 1990s to the current authoritarian rule of Xi Jinping\, Chang’s latest book chronicles life in a communist dictatorship and the threat that modern China poses to the international world order. \nAbout the speaker \nJung Chang was born in China in 1952. In 1978 she left for England\, and she was the first person from the People’s Republic of China to obtain a doctorate from an English university. Her debut Wild Swans was published in 1991 and became a bestseller worldwide. In China\, her books are still banned. Meulenhoff Boekerij also published Mao\, The Empress and Daughters of China.
