SUMMARY:CKN Knowledge Session: China's Nuclear Energy Push – A Blueprint for the World?
DESCRIPTION:China is rapidly expanding its nuclear energy capacity. By 2040\, the country aims to double its capacity and surpass the United States as the world’s largest nuclear power producer. This development raises important questions about China’s energy security\, the role of nuclear power in its energy transition\, and the geopolitical implications of this fast-paced expansion. \nFor Dutch policymakers\, these dynamics are highly relevant: China’s nuclear trajectory influences global energy markets\, shapes climate diplomacy\, and affects international standards for nuclear technology. Understanding these trends can provide valuable context for Dutch and European decision-making on energy\, climate\, and foreign policy. \nIn this upcoming CKN knowledge session\, Floriske Deutman-Bodisco Massink (sinologist and chair of the Foundation for Energy Transition & Nuclear Power) will provide insight into the scale\, motivations\, and implications of China’s nuclear ambitions.

SUMMARY:Book talk: The Party's Interests Come First by Joseph Torigian
DESCRIPTION:China’s leader\, Xi Jinping\, is one of the most powerful individuals in the world—and one of the least understood. Much can be learned\, however\, about both Xi Jinping and the nature of the party he leads from the memory and legacy of his father\, the revolutionary Xi Zhongxun (1913–2002). \nHow Xi Jinping’s upbringing has affected his political beliefs\, is revealed by Joseph Torigian in his new book ‘The Party’s Interests Come First’ – the first biography of Xi Zhongxun ever written in English. \nJoin us for Torigian’s book talk on 13 October and learn more about this recent part of China’s political history. The session will have contributions from LeidenAsiaCentre’s prof.dr. Frank Pieke as a discussant. \nThe book talk will be followed by a networking reception. \nAbout the book:\n‘The Party’s Interests Come First’ is a sweeping account of the Chinese revolution and the early decades of the People’s Republic of China\, as well as a deeply personal exploration of identity within a larger political context. Drawing on an array of new documents\, interviews\, diaries\, and periodicals\, Joseph Torigian vividly tells the life story of Xi Zhongxun\, a man who spent his entire life struggling to balance his own feelings with the Party’s demands. Through the eyes of Xi Jinping’s father\, Torigian reveals the extraordinary organizational\, ideological\, and coercive power of the CCP—and the terrible cost in human suffering that comes with it. \nAbout the writer:\nDr. Joseph Torigian is associate professor at American University in D.C. and is currently working as a research fellow at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University. He has a background in several fields an disciplines\, including international relations\, security studies\, comparative politics\, history\, and Chinese and Russian studies. \nAbout the discussant:\nFrank Pieke is an expert on Chinese politics and the Chinese Communist Party. Pieke is currently working at the East Asia Institute of National University of Singapore.

SUMMARY:The 4th Chinese Mental Health Day in the Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:Mental health is one of the defining issues of our time. The COVID-19 pandemic\, rapid social change\, and modern pressures have made mental well-being more pressing than ever. Yet for many immigrants—including the Chinese community in Europe—mental health remains a sensitive or even stigmatized topic. \nTo address this issue\, the Foundation of Intercultural Participation of Chinese Families (IPCF) launched the Chinese Mental Health Day four years ago. Since then\, the event has become a safe place for Chinese families to gather\, learn\, and openly discuss topics which often left unspoken. This year marks the 4th edition\, taking place in Amsterdam on October 11–12\, 2025. \nThis edition consists of 10 workshops in total. The theme is balance—between body and mind\, self and others\, heritage and new change. The program combines professional expertise with cultural sensitivity\, supported by psychologists\, therapists\, and coaches from across Europe. The Workshop topics covers mindfulness\, body–mind healing\, intimate relationships\, parenting\, art therapy\, and cross-cultural family communication. All sessions are conducted in Mandarin\, tailored to the realities of Chinese people living in Europe.\nChinese Mental Health Day creates a sense of belonging for then\, whose daily life often carries multiple pressure: integrating to local community while preserving their original cultural identity. Parents face different child-rearing norms\, young adults navigate identity conflicts\, and elders may feel isolation. The festival offers space for participants to share experiences\, recognize common struggles\, and draw strength from community. Many participants describe it as a rare opportunity to pause\, reflect\, and find comfort in knowing they are not alone. \nAt its heart\, the event is about connection and empowerment. It not only provides practical skills to handle stress\, promote communication\, and improve relationships but also nurtures cultural identity. By bridging Chinese traditions with Dutch society\, the event helps families feel rooted while also embracing new possibilities. It encourages open dialogue between generations\, and fosters resilience in the face of everyday challenges. \nEvent Information\n• Organizer: Foundation of IPCF\n• Date: October 11–12\, 2025\n• Venue: NIO House Amsterdam\, Leidsestraat 32–34\n• Audience: above the age of 16\n• Language: Mandarin\n• Ticketing: Parenting workshops for free; other workshops €18 / session; registration via link:\nhttps://airtable.com/appQr0oubzmOrGn3A/shrMFedugv8uGlTTX \nThis event is non-profit\, organized by volunteers and supported by sponsors. All proceeds cover venue\, travel\, and essential costs. By attending\, participants not only invest in their own well-being\, but also contribute to building a community culture where mental health is embraced\, not hidden. The organizers stress that this is not a one-time event but part of a growing movement—each edition adds new voices\, deeper understanding\, and stronger community

Sign up quickly for an evening full of discoveries\, conviviality and taste! \nIn this episode: Cantonese cuisine\, with salted duck egg \n \nThursday 2 October 2025 at 6.30 pm \nRestaurant Little Asia\nKleiweg 87\, Rotterdam\n (accessible by tram 4 and 6\, paid parking in the street) \nMaximum number of participants: 18 people \nOn this meal we will learn more about some special dishes from the Cantonese cuisine. The name of the restaurant already reveals that the chef does not only prepare Chinese dishes: flavors from Malaysia can also be found on the menu. The décor of this small restaurant tries to create an atmosphere of a cozy street food eatery at the night market in Southeast Asia. \nYour host Oey Toen Ping will pay extra attention to the salted duck egg ingredient this time. Uncooked duck eggs are placed in a saturated salt bath for 3-4 weeks. Because the eggshells are porous\, the salt penetrates the eggs (slowly). This gives the egg a salty taste. Due to differences in the eggshells\, the salt intake of each egg is different. So one does not know how salty each egg has become. Salting eggs is a traditional way of preserving eggs. \n \nYour host Mr. OEY Toen Ping will again bring some (cultural) objects and tell you about them prior to dinner. \nRegister here:

SUMMARY:Interview and signing session Zhang Yueran: 'Swan Hotel'
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 20 September\, Broese Booksellers is organising an interview and signing session with the Chinese author Zhang Yueran in collaboration with VNC and Prometheus Publishers. Zhang will be interviewed by FD journalist Jeroen Bos. Her novel ‘Cocoon’ was in many ‘Best Books of 2024’ lists and recently her novel ‘Swan Hotel’ was published in translation by Annelous Stiggelbout. If you want to attend this interview\, sign up! \n  \nAbout the book: \nYu Ling is a nanny with a well-to-do family. With her boyfriend\, she kidnaps the seven-year-old son\, Kuankuan\, with the aim of getting a ransom from the family and then running away. However\, when Kuankuan’s father is arrested for corruption\, Yu Ling realizes that she can forget about the ransom. But what should she do with Kuankuan now? Kuankuan himself is not aware of the seriousness of his situation: he has made friends with a goose. \n‘Swan Hotel’ is a smoothly written\, but above all very layered novel by Zhang Yueran\, who made a big impression in the Netherlands with her previous novel\, ‘Cocoon’. In ‘Swan Hotel’\, Zhang writes about class differences\, about the position of women in an apparently modernizing country and about loneliness in a big city. But above all\, ‘Swan Hotel’ is a book that is as original as it is exciting. \nAbout Cocoon: \n‘Zhang Yueran has delivered a clever and penetrating novel in every way\, in the treatment of the subject\, the storylines\, structure and writing style. All that together makes the novel a special book.’ NRC \n‘In her atmospheric\, dark novel\, you can tell from everything that Zhang is not looking for simple explanations.’\nde Volkskrant \n‘Zhang Yueran’s sentences and images have an unreal sheen of both hard-won insights and eternal truths.’\nIan McEwan \n  \nDate: Saturday 20 September | Time: 16.00 – 17.00 hrs | Free admission \nDoors open: 3.30 pm | Start interview: 16.00 hrs | End of interview: 4.45 pm | Signing afterwards. \nIf you want to attend this interview\, registration is required via klantenservice@broese.nl \n  \nZhang Yueran (1982) is one of the most influential Chinese writers of our time\, whose work has invariably sold hundreds of thousands of copies. After a few novels and collections of short stories\, The Nail is her international breakthrough. It was awarded the Prix Transfuge for the best Asian novel and was shortlisted for the Prix du meilleur roman étranger. In 2019 she was a guest writer in Leiden.

SUMMARY:China Café\, Corporate Social Responsibility in China
DESCRIPTION:China Café – September 8 in Utrecht \nCSR in China in the Spotlight – China Café Utrecht \nWhat does Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) mean in the Chinese context? CSR is gaining traction in China. Stricter environmental regulations\, growing attention to workers’ rights\, and the rise of ESG reporting are clear signals of change. However\, the last few years have shown how the well-known CSR framework of People\, Planet\, Profit plays out very differently across regions. What does this mean for international companies operating in China\, and for Chinese companies active here in the Netherlands? \n  \nOn Monday\, September 8\, join us at the China Café in Utrecht\, where we’ll explore these questions in an interview with Valérie Hoeks\, strategic advisor and founder of China Inroads. Drawing on more than 20 years of experience with European companies in China\, Valérie will share practical insights into how businesses navigate CSR and ESG challenges in China’s unique environment. She will highlight the contrast between Europe’s focus on transparency\, accountability\, and strict reporting standards\, and China’s state-driven approach—where innovation and economic growth often take precedence. Through vivid case studies\, Valérie will show how European firms bridge these differences\, balancing home-country commitments with Chinese realities. \n  \nThe evening will be hosted by Lianne Baaij\, Board Member of VNC\, who will interview Valérie and lead the discussion. With space for questions and networking\, this China Café promises to be an inspiring session for anyone interested in China\, CSR\, and international business. This event will provide valuable perspectives\, examples\, and connections to help navigate these cross-cultural differences. \nAbout the speaker: \n \nAs a seasoned Sinologist\, Valérie Hoeks brings over 20 years of experience supporting European and Chinese managers in navigating complex strategic challenges. During her first visit to China in 2000\, Valérie was fascinated by the energy of the country and its people. SUMMARY:VNC China Dining Club - 31 August in Amsterdam
DESCRIPTION:VNC China Dining Club – 31 August in Amsterdam\n \nSunday\, August 31\, 2025\, at 12:30 PMDimsum King\, Fogostraat 10\, Amsterdam Osdorp(accessible by tram line 1\, parking available) \nCantonese cuisine has a custom of eating dimsum (or dianxin) for breakfast. These are steamed or fried small bites \, usually a piece of meat or seafood wrapped in a sheet of flour or rice flour. The steamed appetizers are prepared in a bamboo basket and also arrive on the table that way. The variety in dim sum is huge\, so we can feel free to spend several meals on it with the VNC China Dining Club. \nIn China\, dim sum breakfast blends seamlessly into lunch. For people in Guangdong Province and Hong Kong\, eating dim sum is also a great opportunity to meet friends and business associates. Unfortunately\, dim sum isn’t available for breakfast in the Netherlands. Dim sum restaurants in the Netherlands don’t open until noon. \n \nYour host\, Mr. OEY Toen Ping\, will once again bring several (cultural) artifacts and talk about them. This time\, he will show some acquisitions from his last trip to China (July 2025): books and pottery. \nRegister here:

SUMMARY:Opening nieuwe expositie over familie Zee in Chinatown Katendrecht door David Zee & Vera Zhou

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to deepen your knowledge of Chinese cuisine\, discover new tastes\, and learn more about the rich Chinese culture. Sign up quickly for an evening full of discoveries\, conviviality\, and flavor! \n         Your host is OEY Toen Ping. \nDrs. OEY Toen Ping was born in the Netherlands\, attended primary school in Jakarta\, and studied sociology and sinology. In 1975\, he traveled to China for the first time with a study group from Tilburg University. Since then\, he has visited China dozens of times and witnessed the change and modernization of China up close. \nDuring his trips to China\, he has enjoyed hundreds of meals. Often\, he received explanations about the uniqueness\, ingredients\, and preparation methods of the dishes. Curious for more knowledge about Chinese cuisine (in China\, 8 main cuisines are distinguished)\, Mr. Oey visited training programs and schools for chefs and was able to take a look inside many Chinese kitchens. \nIn Chinese restaurants in the Netherlands\, alongside the ‘Chin.-Ind. dishes’\, more and more ‘original’ Chinese dishes are being included on the menus\, and we see (small) specialized restaurants appearing in many cities\, promoting dishes from Chinese regions. Curious about this new offering\, he began a search for ‘the flavors of China in the Netherlands’. After a while\, the idea for the VNC China Dining Club was born: let’s search together with more people for the ‘flavors of China in the Netherlands’. \nMr. Oey will take you on a journey in the Netherlands to taste special Chinese dishes and will share his knowledge about Chinese food with you. \nRegister here:

SUMMARY:16 June 2025 China Café about Branding in China
DESCRIPTION:Invitation – China Café on June 16 in Utrecht: Building Brands Across Borders – Lessons from China and the West \nThe Netherlands China Association warmly invites you to the next China Café on Monday\, June 16 in Utrecht. This edition dives into a fascinating and highly relevant theme: the differences in brand building between Chinese and Western markets. \nOur special guest is Aldo Spaanjaars\, a seasoned China expert with over 25 years of experience at the crossroads of East and West. He held leadership roles at JWT\, Adidas\, Lacoste\, and Anta Sports—China’s largest sportswear company— was voted Asia Pacific Marketer of the Year and co-authored Dragon Tactics: How Chinese Entrepreneurs Thrive in Uncertainty. Through real-life cases and firsthand experience\, Aldo will explore how successful branding is about more than visibility or volume—it’s about strategic clarity\, cultural sensitivity\, and emotional connection. \nWhat will we explore? \nWe’ll contrast how brand loyalty\, storytelling\, regulation\, and consumer expectations differ between the 2 markets. Topics include: \n\nWhy brand trust and consistency matter more in the West—and how that changes your marketing approach.\nWhy the quest for “the new new” drives marketing in China and what that means for your brand.\nHow important is local relevance—and what does that actually mean for Western brands?\nWhy copy-pasting strategies abroad often fails—and what to do instead\nHow brands like Haier and Shein have adapted successfully by blending global strategy with local insight.\n\nIn the West\, brand = trust = long-term value. Yet in China\, success often comes from speed\, trend adoption\, and digital scale. Understanding both playbooks—and knowing when to adjust—is the key to global success. \nJoin us on June 16 for an insightful and pragmatic conversation with Aldo Spaanjaars on how Chinese and Western branding truly differ—and what that means for businesses\, marketers\, and anyone operating between worlds. \nWe look forward to welcoming you! \nBuy your tickets here:

SUMMARY:Feb. 4\, 2025 - Bettine Vriesekoop at the University of Twente
DESCRIPTION:\nOn Tuesday\, Feb. 4\, 2025\, VNC\, in collaboration with Studium Generale University of Twente\, is hosting a lecture by Bettine Vriesekoop on her latest book: Chinese Wisdom in a Ball; The Game of Tao. \n\nIn her latest book\, her most personal to date\, Bettine describes what she learned from the Taoist attitude to life\, playing table tennis against and training with the Chinese. What is this book about: Her love of table tennis led Bettine Vriesekoop to a deep interest in China. In her sports career and her further life\, a Taoist attitude to life would give her support and guidance. So what does this Chinese philosophy of the sage Laozi entail\, what has Bettine learned from it and what can we too learn from the Tao? Bettine explains this through personal experiences: as a table tennis player who made it to the absolute top partly because of her Chinese insights\, as a correspondent for NRC Handelsblad in Beijing\, as a writer and nowadays as a table tennis coach. In addition to these biographical sketches\, Vriesekoop also provides us with a – modest – textbook based on verses from the Tao book Dao de jing. In doing so\, she gives us simple exercises to find balance in the game. The Chinese wisdom she imparts with bat and ball thus make her training sessions also lessons for everyday life. Date: Tuesday\, February 4\, 2025 \n\nTime: 19:30-21:00 \n\nLocation: De Vrijhof\, De Veldmaat 5\, 7522 NM Enschede \n\nAdmission is free. VNC members and UT students have priority. \n\n\n\nSign up here:

SUMMARY:Mahjong Meet-Up
DESCRIPTION:Discover the world of mahjong! Many Dutch people have the classic game in their cupboard\, but who really knows all the rules? And what about those mysterious sticks? Mahjong has many variants. Perhaps you know the Japanese riichi variant from anime movies\, in which patience and avoiding loss are crucial. Or maybe you’ve ever seen people in China playing the fast-paced\, combination-oriented Hong Kong variant on the streets. Chinese Mahjong Competition Rules (MCR) requires strategic thinking and a touch of opportunism. Of course\, there is the online variant where you have to find pairs\, but we’re going to leave that online nicely on this afternoon. After all\, we have some great games ahead of us. What are we going to do? Play! Especially play. We will focus on MCR\, if there is a lot of interest we will also organize a meeting around riichi. After a brief explanation of the basic terms and how to start the game\, we will get down to business. Topics will include: \n\nHow to start the game (positioning\, wall building\, direction of play)\nThe terms pung\, kong\, chow\nHow to make a valid mahjong hand\nPoints\n\nIf you are already advanced but want to gain new insights\, you are also welcome. After a pleasant afternoon of mahjong there is the possibility to have dinner together at your own expense. Location: Zijp 25\, Zijpendaalseweg 25\, Arnhem\nDate: December 15\, 2024\nTime: 14:00-17:00\nCost: free for VNC members\, €5 for non-VNC members (pay on location) Zijp 25 is within walking distance of Arnhem Central Station.
