Memories of authoritarian China' DESCRIPTION:On Monday 5 October\, the Netherlands-China Association (VNC)\, in collaboration with Leiden Asia Centre (LAC)\, is organising a book presentation with journalist and China expert Garrie van Pinxteren. \nOn the occasion of the publication of her new book ‘Control and delete. Memories of authoritarian China’ \, Van Pinxteren talks to LAC director Floris Harm about her many years of experience with China and about the far-reaching changes the country has undergone in recent decades. \nAs a student\, Van Pinxteren experienced the first phase of China’s opening in 1982. After Mao Zedong’s death\, there was room for reforms\, economic growth and remarkable social dynamics. More than forty years later\, in 2025\, she will leave China again as a correspondent. In the meantime\, the country has changed dramatically and Xi Jinping has further concentrated power. The space for dissenting opinions and memories has greatly decreased. \nIn ‘Control and delete’ \, Van Pinxteren investigates what this development means for daily life. Who decides what people are allowed to remember? What happens when the state tries to determine what should be forgotten? And how does a society change when political control penetrates more and more into personal life? \nDetails \nWhen: Monday 5 October\, 19:30 – 21:00\nWhere: Wijnhaven 3.46\, Turfmarkt 99\, 2511 DP The Hague \nProgramme \n19:00–19:30 — Walk-in\n19:30–19:40 — Introduction VNC chair Monique Knapen\n19:40–20:15 — Book presentation: Garrie van Pinxteren in conversation with LAC Director Floris Harm\n20:15–20:55 — Q&A (moderator Floris Harm)\n20:55-21:00 — Closing: Monique Knapen\, chair VNC \nAbout the speaker \nPhoto: Merlijn DoomernikAll rights reserved\nGarrie van Pinxteren is a journalist and sinologist. What does the Benelux Business Survey reveal? \nHow do Benelux companies experience doing business in China? Where are the opportunities\, what challenges do they encounter and how do they see the future of their activities in the Chinese market? \nDuring the next China Café on October 8 in Eindhoven\, we will dive into the results of the Sino Benelux Business Survey\, conducted by MSA Asia and Benelux Chamber of Commerce. A valuable indicator of the business climate in China\, based on the experiences and expectations of companies that operate there on a daily basis. \nBut what do the figures really tell us? And how do the results relate to the experiences of entrepreneurs and financial experts in practice? \n \nJonathan Xu of Benelux Chamber of Commerce and Brian Blömer\, Partner at MSA Advisory Asia\, present the key findings of the study. Then\, two survey participants bring the numbers to life with their own experiences: Mathijs de Boer\, International Desk Manager Asia at Rabobank\, and Tianhao Hu\, Head of Financial Control at Rituals (subject to change). \nThe Chinese government also has its say. Jin Yuan\, Economic & Commercial Councellor of the Chinese Embassy\, reflects on the results from the perspective of the Chinese government. How does China view the concerns and expectations of foreign companies? And what developments could influence the future business environment? \nA fascinating meeting in which research results\, practical experiences and the Chinese government perspective come together. With plenty of room for questions\, discussion and exchanging experiences. \nAre you active in the Chinese market\, are you considering doing business with China or do you want to better understand how the business climate is developing? Then you can’t miss this China Café! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nThanks to our sponsor St Anny Food \nChina Café is made possible by the involvement of St Anny Food.
