Elf hedendaagse kunstenaars laten zich inspireren door verborgen Chinese schatten uit het depot van het Centraal Museum. \nVier maanden lang biedt Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd onderdak aan deze zelden of nooit getoonde objecten en aan wat deze bij de kunstenaars losmaken. En de bosrijke omgeving is goed voor een knipoog naar het sprookje van Doornroosje: het eeuwenoude Chinese porselein wordt eventjes wakker gekust. \nLandhuis Oud Amelisweerd met z’n uniek\, handgeschilderde\, achttiende-eeuwse behang uit China biedt een passend en sfeervol decor voor deze ontmoeting tussen oost en west\, tussen vroeger en nu. Ook de gunsten en gruwelen van de handel met Azië kunnen zomaar in de werken doorschemeren. \nDe kunstenaars variëren in leeftijd tussen begin twintig en een eind in de zestig. Acht geboren in Nederland\, drie hebben Aziatische wortels. Ze hebben één of meer kunstwerken uit het museumdepot als het ware geadopteerd en vertellen daar in keramiek hun eigen verhaal\, gevoelens en gedachten bij. Dat kan gaan over vorm\, verleiding\, verzet\, geschiedenis\, kleur\, kunde\, techniek\, functie\, impact\, vreugde\, verdriet\, noem maar op… De kunstenaar is vrij. \nKeramiekpodium Utrechtse Aarde is de afgelopen jaren samenwerking aangegaan met andere disciplines en organisaties. Steeds met als doel om verrassend en vernieuwend werk te laten ontstaan. Kunstenaars voelen zo de uitdaging om buiten de gebaande paden te denken en te werken\, maar toch trouw te blijven aan de eigen stijl en zeggingskracht. Worstelend met zijn hybride identiteit – door zijn Nederlandse leeftijdsgenoten ‘peanut’ genoemd en door de Chinese gemeenschap ‘gwai zai’ (buitenlander) – begon hij aan een decennialange reis om de onbekende geschiedenis van zijn familie te verzamelen en te bewaren. Zijn archief\, dat meer dan een eeuw beslaat\, bevat foto’s\, brieven\, documenten en krantenknipsels die het leven van de eerste Chinese migranten in Rotterdam documenteren. \nIn 2022 stuitte kunstenaar Vera Yijun Zhou op David Zees archief terwijl ze worstelde met haar eigen vragen over migratie en identiteit. Als eerste generatie-Chinese immigrant in Nederland stond ze op een persoonlijk kruispunt: of ze in het land zou blijven of na haar studie naar China zou terugkeren. Bureaucratische ‘limbo’\, eindeloze papierwinkel en het existentiële verlangen naar ergens bij horen\, transformeerden migratie van een abstract concept tot een beleving. Dit moment van onzekerheid leidde tot haar samenwerking met David Zee\, niet alleen als onderzoeksvraag\, maar ook als een belichaamd proces om haar eigen status in Nederland te begrijpen. \nHet leidde tot een tentoonstelling in Sjanghai en een fotoboek in China samen met David Zee gemaakt en bovendien gedrukt op de plek waar zijn grootvader is geboren\, in Ningbo. Het boek en de expositie richten zich op de migratiereis van de familie Zee van Ningbo naar Rotterdam in de afgelopen eeuw\, combineert archieffoto’s\, veldonderzoek en visuele interventies in drie havensteden tussen Nederland en China: Rotterdam\, Shanghai en Ningbo. Het fotoboek bevraagt ideeën over ontheemding\, diasporageheugen en identiteit in transitie. Yet for many immigrants—including the Chinese community in Europe—mental health remains a sensitive or even stigmatized topic. \nTo address this issue\, the Foundation of Intercultural Participation of Chinese Families (IPCF) launched the Chinese Mental Health Day four years ago. Since then\, the event has become a safe place for Chinese families to gather\, learn\, and openly discuss topics which often left unspoken. This year marks the 4th edition\, taking place in Amsterdam on October 11–12\, 2025. \nThis edition consists of 10 workshops in total. Hier zijn kunstwerken van zgn. Toyisten te zien. Het Toyisme is een vrij recente stroming in de kunst en bestaat uit een internationaal collectief van kunstenaars. VNC leden worden van harte uitgenodigd om bij de opening van deze expositie aanwezig te zijn. \nMonique Knapen verzorgt op de openingsdag op 18 oktober een inleiding over kunst in China. Vervolgens vertelt Dejo\, de initiatiefnemer van het Toyisme en zelf Toyist\, over deze stroming en zijn boeiende ervaringen in China. Aansluitend wordt de opening van de tentoonstelling verricht. \nTe zien – én te koop – zijn 32 kunstwerken; schilderijen\, beelden en grafiek van diverse kunstenaars. De kunstwerken zijn onderdeel van een grotere tentoonstelling die eerder dit jaar te zien was in Beijing.  Ook zijn er boeken\, kunstkaarten\, kussens en zijden sjaals ontworpen door Toyisten te koop.
