SUMMARY:CKN Knowledge Session: What Can Europe Learn from Taiwan’s Fight Against Disinformation?
DESCRIPTION:How do societies deal with disinformation in the age of artificial intelligence? And what can Europe learn from Taiwan\, one of the world’s “hottest zones” for online manipulation and fake news? On Tuesday 11 November (09:00–10:00)\, the China Knowledge Network hosts a knowledge session with Professor Florian Schneider\, Academic Director of the Leiden Asia Centre and Professor Modern China at the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies. \nEarlier this year\, Schneider spent six months in Taiwan as a visiting scholar at the Department of Political Science of National Taiwan University\, where he conducted research for the project Fake Factory: Disinformation and Learning Machines in Taiwan. His study explores how people in Taiwan think about and respond to disinformation in the context of AI – and what lessons this might hold for Europe. According to Schneider\, Taiwan shows that panic is not the answer. While technological tools matter\, the real key lies in strengthening AI literacy\, media education\, and digital skills. Above all\, human trust and social connection remain essential to counter disinformation – whether in politics\, health information\, or public debate. \nDuring this session\, Professor Schneider will share his main findings and reflections from the field\, and discuss what these insights could mean for policymakers\, journalists\, and researchers in Europe. It’s an opportunity to learn more\, ask questions\, and exchange ideas on how we can build more resilient information environments. \nProgramme \n8:45–9:00 AM | Doors open\n9:00–9:05 AM | Introduction\n9:05–9:30 AM | Presentation by Florian Schneider\n9:30–10:00 AM | Q&A moderated by Floris Harm\, CKN/Leiden Asia Centre\n10:00 AM | Event ends

SUMMARY:New Realities: How the next Dutch government should deal with China
DESCRIPTION:The Netherlands is faced with major changes in its geopolitical environment. A key driver of these changes is China\, but also the reaction of other major powers to China’s growing influence. The way in which the experiences of ASML and Nexperia have become high-profile cases in China-US-EU relations clearly illustrates the impact of geopolitical changes. \nWhat should the new Dutch government do to respond to China’s increased geopolitical significance? Two speakers will reflect on this question from a historical point of view: how did China come to occupy the international position that it now has and how does this relate to the Netherlands? \nGeopolitical analyst Frans-Paul van der Putten will address this question based on his recent book\, China Resurrected. In the book\, he presents a long-term perspective on how China since the nineteenth century gradually developed into a modern world power. Discussant will be Li-Min Teh of Leiden University.

SUMMARY:November 17\, 2025 China Café: Finger on the Urban Pulse
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the People Behind the Market \nChinese cities are evolving at lightning speed\, becoming hubs of creativity\, innovation and cultural experimentation. But who are the people driving this transformation? In this China Café\, Elsbeth van Paridon\, a Beijing-based Dutch Sinologist who looks at China through the lens of fashion and urban culture\, a journalist at China’s only English newsweekly “Beijing Review” and founder of Chinatemper.com\, will guide us into the world of the modern Chinese urban dweller. The interview will be guided by Lianne Baaij\, VNC Board Member. \n \nLearn how young city residents navigate work\, lifestyle and social expectations\, how they express their identities through fashion and urban social trends\, and what motivates them as consumers\, colleagues\, and collaborators. This session offers Dutch entrepreneurs and professionals unique insights into the mindset\, values and ambitions of China’s new urban generation — and practical takeaways for building meaningful connections and successful partnerships. \nExplore the people behind the trends\, understand the cultural dynamics shaping their decisions\, and gain a fresh perspective on what it takes to engage effectively with China’s urban market today. \n \nAbout the speaker: \nVan Paridon has lived and worked in China for a total of 11 years at this point — not from the sidelines\, but at the very pulse of its media world. As a Sinologist and journalist with boots on the ground\, and in her capacity of reporter and video host for Beijing Review\, she brings a rare insider perspective on modern China. Through her unique lens of fashion\, urban life and youth culture\, Van Paridon uncovers the stories and cultural shifts that define the cities and people shaping today’s China. \nProgramm: \n17.00 – 17.45 hrs walkin and networking \n17.45 – 18.30 interview \n18.30 – 19.00 networking \nPlease register here:
