SUMMARY:Wakker kussen
DESCRIPTION:Een expositie die over grenzen heengaat: van eeuwen en continenten. Zo is de expositie ‘Wakker kussen’ te bestempelen. Elf hedendaagse kunstenaars laten zich inspireren door verborgen Chinese schatten uit het depot van het Centraal Museum. \nVier maanden lang biedt Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd onderdak aan deze zelden of nooit getoonde objecten en aan wat deze bij de kunstenaars losmaken. En de bosrijke omgeving is goed voor een knipoog naar het sprookje van Doornroosje: het eeuwenoude Chinese porselein wordt eventjes wakker gekust. \nLandhuis Oud Amelisweerd met z’n uniek\, handgeschilderde\, achttiende-eeuwse behang uit China biedt een passend en sfeervol decor voor deze ontmoeting tussen oost en west\, tussen vroeger en nu. Ook de gunsten en gruwelen van de handel met Azië kunnen zomaar in de werken doorschemeren. \nDe kunstenaars variëren in leeftijd tussen begin twintig en een eind in de zestig. Acht geboren in Nederland\, drie hebben Aziatische wortels. Ze hebben één of meer kunstwerken uit het museumdepot als het ware geadopteerd en vertellen daar in keramiek hun eigen verhaal\, gevoelens en gedachten bij. Dat kan gaan over vorm\, verleiding\, verzet\, geschiedenis\, kleur\, kunde\, techniek\, functie\, impact\, vreugde\, verdriet\, noem maar op… De kunstenaar is vrij. \nKeramiekpodium Utrechtse Aarde is de afgelopen jaren samenwerking aangegaan met andere disciplines en organisaties. Steeds met als doel om verrassend en vernieuwend werk te laten ontstaan. Kunstenaars voelen zo de uitdaging om buiten de gebaande paden te denken en te werken\, maar toch trouw te blijven aan de eigen stijl en zeggingskracht. Kruisbestuiving over de grenzen van tijd en land vormt dit keer het experiment\, uitmondend in een gecombineerde expositie van historisch en hedendaags werk.\nLandhuis Oud Amelisweerd is de enthousiaste gastgever. Rondom het pand vinden keramiek-workshops plaats\, onder meer door Kunstenhuis Idea\, met vestigingen in Zeist\, Bunnik\, De Bilt\, Soest en Driebergen. DESCRIPTION:China’s leader\, Xi Jinping\, is one of the most powerful individuals in the world—and one of the least understood. Much can be learned\, however\, about both Xi Jinping and the nature of the party he leads from the memory and legacy of his father\, the revolutionary Xi Zhongxun (1913–2002). \nHow Xi Jinping’s upbringing has affected his political beliefs\, is revealed by Joseph Torigian in his new book ‘The Party’s Interests Come First’ – the first biography of Xi Zhongxun ever written in English. \nJoin us for Torigian’s book talk on 13 October and learn more about this recent part of China’s political history. The session will have contributions from LeidenAsiaCentre’s prof.dr. Frank Pieke as a discussant. \nThe book talk will be followed by a networking reception. \nAbout the book:\n‘The Party’s Interests Come First’ is a sweeping account of the Chinese revolution and the early decades of the People’s Republic of China\, as well as a deeply personal exploration of identity within a larger political context. Drawing on an array of new documents\, interviews\, diaries\, and periodicals\, Joseph Torigian vividly tells the life story of Xi Zhongxun\, a man who spent his entire life struggling to balance his own feelings with the Party’s demands. Through the eyes of Xi Jinping’s father\, Torigian reveals the extraordinary organizational\, ideological\, and coercive power of the CCP—and the terrible cost in human suffering that comes with it. \nAbout the writer:\nDr. Joseph Torigian is associate professor at American University in D.C. and is currently working as a research fellow at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University. He has a background in several fields an disciplines\, including international relations\, security studies\, comparative politics\, history\, and Chinese and Russian studies. \nAbout the discussant:\nFrank Pieke is an expert on Chinese politics and the Chinese Communist Party. Pieke is currently working at the East Asia Institute of National University of Singapore.

SUMMARY:Expositie Toyisme: Ik Speel\, dus ik Ben
DESCRIPTION:Vanaf 18 oktober is er in Bergen een bijzondere tentoonstelling Ik Speel\, dus ik ben te zien. Hier zijn kunstwerken van zgn. Toyisten te zien. Het Toyisme is een vrij recente stroming in de kunst en bestaat uit een internationaal collectief van kunstenaars. VNC leden worden van harte uitgenodigd om bij de opening van deze expositie aanwezig te zijn. \nMonique Knapen verzorgt op de openingsdag op 18 oktober een inleiding over kunst in China. Vervolgens vertelt Dejo\, de initiatiefnemer van het Toyisme en zelf Toyist\, over deze stroming en zijn boeiende ervaringen in China. Aansluitend wordt de opening van de tentoonstelling verricht. \nTe zien – én te koop – zijn 32 kunstwerken; schilderijen\, beelden en grafiek van diverse kunstenaars. De kunstwerken zijn onderdeel van een grotere tentoonstelling die eerder dit jaar te zien was in Beijing.  Ook zijn er boeken\, kunstkaarten\, kussens en zijden sjaals ontworpen door Toyisten te koop.
