De tentoonstelling vindt plaats in de behangkamers van Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd\, naast het Chinese papier behang. Dit behang is één van Europa’s best bewaarde collecties handgeschilderde behangsels uit de Qing-dynastie\, een uitzonderlijk getuigenis van eeuwenlange culturele uitwisseling. De tentoonstelling laat zien hoe beelden\, ambachtelijke technieken en ideeën zich voortdurend door tijd en ruimte verplaatsen. \nGlas zelf\, kwetsbaar maar duurzaam\, vormt hierbij een krachtige metafoor voor migratie\, vernieuwing en de verbinding tussen traditie\, natuur en ons steeds veranderende gevoel van verbondenheid. Maar wat in Europa als ‘verantwoord’ wordt gezien\, hoeft in China niet precies hetzelfde te betekenen. In de EU ligt de nadruk sterk op individuele en arbeidsrechten\, terwijl in China maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen vaker wordt gekoppeld aan bredere economische en sociale doelen\, zoals ontwikkeling en armoedebestrijding. Dat verschil in perspectief kan in de praktijk verrassend groot zijn. \nEn juist daar wordt het interessant. Want wat gebeurt er wanneer een Europees bedrijf Chinese arbeidsomstandigheden beoordeelt vanuit Europese criteria? Of wanneer een Chinees bedrijf met zijn duurzaamheidsbeleid de Europese markt op wil? Verschillende uitgangspunten kunnen leiden tot misverstanden\, verkeerde beoordelingen en financiële of reputatierisico’s. \nTijdens het China Café op 21 september nemen Vera Moll\, partner bij KPMG\, en Congrui Qiao\, onderzoeker bij China Knowledge Network\, ons mee in deze verschillende werelden. Aan de hand van concrete praktijkvoorbeelden laten zij zien waar Europese en Chinese opvattingen over verantwoord ondernemen botsen – én hoe bedrijven daarmee om kunnen gaan. \nWant verschillen hoeven niet alleen een obstakel te zijn. Daarnaast leidt zij de duurzaamheidsgroep van de EU-China-afdeling\, waarbij zij Chinese bedrijven ondersteunt die actief zijn op de EU-markt. \n \nQiao Cong-rui is juridisch onderzoeker en beleidsadviseur\, gespecialiseerd in duurzaam recht en ontwikkeling. Zij is momenteel hoofdonderzoeker voor het door de Nederlandse overheid gefinancierde project Responsible Business Conduct in China\, de EU en 10 partnerregio’s\, en fungeert als strategisch adviseur van de All-China New Energy Chamber of Commerce. Cong-rui behaalde een PhD in Internationaal en Europees Recht aan de Universiteit Utrecht (2018) en een universitaire onderwijsbevoegdheid aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2023). Zij is auteur van de Springer-monografie Chinese Rules and Procedures for Addressing Mass Actions (2024) en mede-redacteur van het binnenkort te verschijnen boek van Kluwer International Law: The Making of Sustainable Law and the Cultural Legitimacy of Corporate Compliance across 12 Global Markets (2027). And what lessons does Africa offer for policymakers\, businesses and development practitioners seeking to engage with the continent? \nIn this CKN Knowledge Session\, acclaimed author and economist Joe Studwell will explore Africa’s economic transformation through the lens of China’s growing role on the continent.
