New Realities: How the next Dutch government should deal with China

The Netherlands is faced with major changes in its geopolitical environment. A key driver of these changes is China, but also the reaction of other major powers to China’s growing influence. The way in which the experiences of ASML and Nexperia have become high-profile cases in China-US-EU relations clearly illustrates the impact of geopolitical changes.
What should the new Dutch government do to respond to China’s increased geopolitical significance? Two speakers will reflect on this question from a historical point of view: how did China come to occupy the international position that it now has and how does this relate to the Netherlands?
Geopolitical analyst Frans-Paul van der Putten will address this question based on his recent book, China Resurrected. In the book, he presents a long-term perspective on how China since the nineteenth century gradually developed into a modern world power. Discussant will be Li-Min Teh of Leiden University.
