Between Tradition and Transition – Love, Sexuality and Intimacy in the Netherlands and China

How are changing social values reshaping the way we experience love, intimacy, and relationships?

In this cross-cultural dialogue, Dutch sexologist Sanderijn van der Doef and Shanghai-based mental health platform founder Xixi Wang explore how people in the Netherlands and China navigate intimacy in an era of rapid social change. Through personal insights and professional perspectives, they will discuss relationships, sexuality, family expectations, individual freedom, and the search for meaningful connection in contemporary society.

About the speaker:

Sanderijn van der Doef is a Dutch psychologist and sexologist with extensive experience in sexual health, education and international development. She has worked as a consultant and trainer in many countries, including China, focusing on sexuality education, reproductive health and open communication about relationships and sexuality. She is also an author and a frequent speaker on sexual health and cultural perspectives on sexuality. In china she has been working on sexuality education  since 2009. She closely worked together with Prof Liu Wenli and the university of Chengdu where sexuality education is now a real major.

Xixi Wang is a Dutch university alumna (BA Social Justice & Philosophy, CA/NO; Research MA Gender Studies, NL) from China. As the Founder of CUE (since 2020), a mental health platform, she sees supporting people through key life transitions as her life’s mission. She is passionate about bridging knowledge across borders and advancing health equity, with previous research-informed articles reaching over 20 million readers in China and the U.S.
