Brings China closer

VNC Engaged in Talks with the House of Representatives on China Knowledge Agenda

On behalf of the Netherlands China Association (VNC), Chair Monique Knapen, alongside VNC members Robert van Kan and Frank Yang, recently held talks with members of the House of Representatives involved in the China committee within the standing Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Through these discussions, the VNC aims to contribute to the further strengthening of knowledge about China within politics and society. The association views it as its civic and social role to make expertise, practical experience, and nuanced insights regarding China available to policymakers and other stakeholders.

China on the Knowledge Agenda of the House of Representatives

China has been on the knowledge agenda of the House of Representatives since 2023. The changing and growing role of China – economically, technologically and geopolitically – makes the subject increasingly relevant for the Netherlands and Europe.

During the strategic procedural meeting on 1 April 2026, the standing Committee on Foreign Affairs decided to re-include China as a key theme on its knowledge agenda. To this end, a special preparatory group was established, consisting of MPs from various political parties.

In recent years, the committee has organized discussions with international experts and working visits to cities such as Berlin, London, and Stockholm to gain deeper insight into how other nations shape their China policies.

Constructive Discussions

On behalf of VNC, initial introductory talks took place with MPs Tom van der Lee (PRO) and Michiel Hoogeveen (JA21). Although both politicians view China from different political perspectives, the discussions were open, constructive, and held in a positive atmosphere.

During the meetings, VNC presented its mission and activities. It was emphasized that many VNC members possess in-depth knowledge of China derived from their professional and personal experience, and are eager to contribute to a better-informed dialogue on China in the Netherlands.

Both MPs underlined the importance of dialogue, knowledge sharing, and mutual understanding. They also recognized the significance of organizations like VNC, which contribute to a nuanced image of China through their civic engagement.

VNC looks forward to further contacts with the parliamentary committee and hopes to continue making a constructive contribution to the exchange of knowledge on China in the future.

To be continued.
