The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince), published in 1943 by the author and pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, is the most translated book in French literature. Now a new branch has appeared on the family tree: a bilingual Chinese-Dutch edition, published by Ad. Donker.
The Little Prince tells the story of a young prince who visits various planets and meets peculiar adults along the way, learning about friendship, love, and human eccentricities.
The Little Prince is also popular in China. Over the years, more than 100 different editions have been published in Chinese. Publisher Ad. Donker states: “According to connoisseurs the 2002 edition by Zhou Kexi is the best. His translation is characterized by high literary quality and the use of deep emotional and philosophical nuances.”
This edition features the original illustrations (also created by De Saint-Exupéry). The Dutch translation is by Erik van Muiswinkel, and the Chinese translation by Zhou Kexi. There are also bilingual editions in Dutch paired with French, English, Spanish, Arabic, Turkish, Latin and soon Italian as well.
