Brings China closer

Welcome to ChinaNU+

ChinaNU+ is a magazine that has been in publication for 50 years. Now fully digital, the magazine is published by Vereniging Nederland China and aims to share knowledge about China. We publish new articles on a continuous basis and compile them into an edition every quarter. From now on some articles are accessible to members only. All our articles – on China’s culture, economy, and science – are written by an enthusiastic editorial team and leading authors, all volunteers.

This summer edition once again offers a wealth of articles:

Under Culture & Society, you’ll find, among others, the thought-provoking piece Between Applause and Aversion: Shen Yun and the Paradox of Freedom by Taylor Carter, and the third part in our series on Chinese associations in the Netherlands, written by Im Fong Liu. There’s also a wonderful report by Astrid Bouwman on the guided tour through the Groninger Museum, organized by VNC.

In the section Economy & Business, former president of the Dutch Central Bank, Nout Wellink, reviews House of Huawei by Eva Dou. Yereth Jansen shares astonishing insights into developments in China, based on his work in Shanghai. Jan van der Putten draws a sobering comparison between President Trump and Chairman Mao.

Under Education & Science, Robert van Kan examines the growing tension between academic collaboration and national security. We are also proud to feature contributions by Harry den Hartog, who explores renewed interest in rural life in China. And in Language with Character, Floor Frequin once again offers something to learn.

Also in this edition:

  • A poem by Taiwanese writer Ling Yu, selected by translator Silvia Marijnissen
  • China Now Nearly Half a Century Old, part 6 of Jaap Post’s series
  • Two columns: Ans Hooft on China’s Bao’an, and a new piece by Lieven Walther

Happy reading!
