Despite all the political vicissitudes, China remains an interesting emerging economy with growth potential. However, for many investors and investors, China is still unknown.
Financial experts say Chinese stock valuations are “very attractive,” but do not expect a rapid advance given the global economic problems. Chinese markets have significantly underperformed comparable companies in the U.S. and Europe. Although the Chinese stock market is becoming more open to foreigners, it is still not so easy for Dutch investors to invest in Chinese stocks. The easiest way to play the market is through an investment fund or ETF. Another option is investing in Chinese stocks listed on Wall Street. This seems to be slowly becoming more popular among Dutch investors, as we can conclude from research by several banks. In the top 10 U.S. stocks in recent years, Chinese stocks with a listing on Wall Street have emerged for the first time, such as e-commerce giant Alibaba and electric car manufacturer Nio. Reuters predicts more investors will flock to Chinese financial markets over the next decade.
On the one hand, the Chinese stock market (the second largest in the world) is experiencing very interesting developments. Most of the Chinese stock market (about 70%) consists of shares of local Chinese companies, which are listed on domestic stock exchanges. Recently, it has also become possible to invest in these local Chinese stocks through Dutch investment institutions.
On the other hand, trade war sentiment and geopolitical concerns have caused Chinese companies to look at opportunities for alternative listings on a foreign exchange or even consider a second listing. For the AEX, this is not yet an issue.
The VNC aims to promote interest about Chinese society and contacts between the two peoples both culturally and economically. To reach new target groups and gain knowledge, the BeleggersFair at the beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam is a wonderful event. The VNC successfully organized a master class on November 4 during the “Beleggersdag”. The intention is to make this an annual VNC event.
